It turns out that the cause of my late shifts was the tv valve. The bracket that holds the end of the cable got knocked down about a 1/32", just enough to slightly rub the valve. Every once and a while it will kick out of second gear after 4 or 5 seconds. FWIW, rev match seems to help even though I don't have a problem matching the shift. I now go 1-3 in the morning until warmed up. Note, I am on the Gulf Coast and it is rerely below 40f.
